Patty got Chance on a whim. While at a pathology meeting in San Diego, I stopped by to visit one of my veterinary school classmates that lived in the area. She took me to meet a well known whippet breeder, Mary Dukes, who lived near by. Although I was not looking for another whippet at the time, I fell in love with a red and white 1 year old male from one of Mary’s litter. I called Bruce from San Diego and told him about this whippet that I really, really wanted to bring home. He said, “well you are taking a chance since you don’t know much about him”, so we called him Chance. He was my first show dog. He had a couple of nice placements including BOB and Winner’s Dog, but developed a heart murmur, so I neutered him and he became one of our spoiled rotten coach potatoes. Despite developing a rather loud murmur at a young age, his heart disease advanced very slowly and he never developed any symptoms. Cancer (lymphoma) claimed his life at age 13 ½. He was my snuggle bunny whippet and is greatly missed.
